November 26, 2020Hello, and welcome to the Thursday edition of the CurveFlattener. It's Chronicle assistant editor Kylie Rebernik here, reporting from my suddenly much more cramped condo in Oakville, Ont.

With the second wave of Covid-19 crashing down, Covid cases are increasing in Canadian schools, including here in Ontario. This has resulted in an uptick of virtual learning, meaning that my partner has switched to online teaching, resulting in our condo's transformation to one unitary work-from-home office. I must admit that even though the space feels cramped, there is one member of our household who is absolutely loving it. My once trusty sidekick, Snowball, familiar to DCF readers from past editions, has forsaken my workspace and now hangs out with my partner while he teaches. Thus is the lure of education, inspiring humans and felines alike.

As seen in several news accounts, many small businesses in the Toronto area,
including the now-infamous Adamson Barbecue, are unhappy with Ontario Premier Doug Ford's decision to close indoor restaurant dining in the effort to slow the advance of Covid-19. Aggrieved, and seemingly in several cases, dull-witted carnivores protested the temporary suspension of their inalienable rights to transmit potentially infected human slobber while passing around a platter of ham hocks (photo above by Evan Mitsui, from CBC News website.) However, according to a new report, Ontario's Auditor General has found that the province's Chief Medical Officer and his team did not effectively lead the response to Covid-19 during the early days of the pandemic. This begs the question: If a better response to the pandemic was available at the first signs of the pandemic, would small businesses still find themselves shuttered in late November?

The organizers of the National Pharmaceutical Congress are proud to release our new weekly podcast series, hosted by Peter Brenders. Peter's guest for this week's program is Denis Hello of AbbVie Canada. Listen here now, or download the episode and play it at your convenience. The NPC Podcast is presented in cooperation with Impres Pharma

COVID CHRONICLE 11/26/2020
  • A recent opinion piece published online by Journal of the American Medical Association (Nov. 20, 2020) has concluded that adults are experiencing greater adverse mental health effects of the pandemic at a more disproportionate rate compared to young people.
    • Researchers from Texas have found that women who were pregnant and were diagnosed with Covid-19 did not have more adverse events compared to women who were not diagnosed with Covid-19. The study, which included data from 3,374 participants, was published in JAMA (Nov 19, 2020)
    • According to the British Medical Journal (Nov 16, 2020), government authorities in the U.S. and Belgium are letting healthcare workers who have Covid-19 return to work, citing staff shortages.
