October 9, 2020Hello, TGIF, and welcome to the (Canadian) Thanksgiving edition of the Daily CurveFlattener. It is assistant editor Kylie Rebernik here reporting from the Saugeen Shores of Ontario, where I will be spending my socially distant long weekend.

This year Thanksgiving will look a little different. What is usually a weekend of a large family and friend gatherings will be made up of small (fewer than 10) gatherings in some provinces like Ontario, public health officials are requesting that you only spend Thanksgiving with the people you live with.
Although this directive was confusing to Ontario Premier Doug Ford, as mentioned in Wednesday's DCF, it is important we listen to public health as yesterday Ontario reported 797 new cases and four deaths

Even though this year is different than most, it doesn't mean that there aren't socially distant activities you can do. A website called "To Do Canada" has put together a list of activities you can do in each province that is socially distant. For example, this year's Balls  Falls Thanksgiving Festival is going virtual. The event which is normally held over four days near Niagara Falls, Ont., with food, vendors, music, and historical tours is now offering a "virtual adventure where guests will enjoy heritage village tours and historical demonstrations, as well as music and entertainment, all from the comfort of their home. This year’s virtual event will feature more than 80 artisans, vendors, demonstrators, and entertainers participating in this long annual tradition.

However you may be spending your long weekend, I hope you are safe and well.

COVID CHRONICLE 10/9/2020

  • A new Patient Page published in JAMA (Oct. 1, 2020) outlines the risk of contracting Covid-19 during air travel, highlighting that contracting Covid-19 is actually higher in an office building, grocery store, or commuter train.
      • New research published in Fundam Clinical Pharmocol (Oct. 4, 2020) has reviewed new antiviral therapies developed between 1987 and 2019 and how these therapies may play a role in the treatment of Covid-19.
      • According to a study published in Encephale (Jun. 2020), children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may actually experience stability during the Covid-19 lockdown. Researchers had 538 parents of children with ADHD respond to a survey and although some parents reported a worsening of symptoms, overall most children had an improvement in ADHD largely due to less school-related anxiety.
