August 7, 2020—It’s Friday, and the weekend is almost here. Reporting from Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula, just a couple of country blocks from the banks of the Old Welland Canal where the beagles like to run and tumble, is Editorial Director Allan Ryan.
How about that Dr. Deborah Birx, co-ordinator (for the time being, at least) of U.S. president Donald J. Trump’s coronavirus task force? She’s in hot water with the nutty boss for interviews where she opined that America is entering a ‘new and dangerous phase’ in the Covid pandemic.
Dr. Birx told CNN’s State of the Union broadcast that "What we are seeing today is different from March and April. [Coronavirus] is extraordinarily widespread,” Dr. Birx said, adding that rural areas have not been spared. “So everybody who lives in a rural area, you are not immune.” She did not dispute an observation by a former U.S. Federal Drug Administration Commissioner that the virus could kill 300,000 Americans by the end of December, saying: "Anything is possible."
The comments by Dr. Birx exorcised the U.S. head of state, but he later claimed that Dr. Birx had only been responding to criticism from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Trump said it was not the escalating coronavirus infection that prompted Birx’s assessment, but Pelosi’s criticism of her. “In order to counter Nancy, Deborah took the bait & hit us. Pathetic!” Trump tweeted.
The U.S. has the world’s largest number of Covid-19 cases—more than four million cases—and over 158,000 deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They say Black, Latino and Indigenous communities are experiencing a disproportionate number of deaths.
Last week, Dr. Birx contradicted her boss and agreed with the U.S. FDA assessment that the anti-malarial therapy hydroxychloroquine—frequently touted by Trump as a cure and who underwent a course of the therapy himself—is not effective for treating the virus.

COVID CHRONICLE 08/07/2020
- Significant decline in preterm births seen during Covid-19 pandemic, according to observations in Calgary, Ireland and Denmark. Researchers believe a number of factors may be involved, including the fact that many mothers-to-be were able to avoid usual stressors by staying home earlier in their pregnancy. Environmental factors, such as less air pollution from fewer cars on the road, are also potential factors. Social distancing may have also reduced exposure to germs and viruses, physicians say.
- Quebec's COVID-19 cases may be three times higher than reported, according to a new Héma-Québec study reported in the Montreal Gazette.
This study assessed blood donations from 7,691 people aged 18 to 69 years to detect whether they had Covid-19 antibodies, and results showed that 2.23 per cent of blood donors had been infected. That percentage suggests 124,880 people in that age group had contracted the virus—more than triple the 37,000 cases officially reported for the same age group during the same period. - A mutation that caused the novel coronavirus to spread more efficiently may also potentially make it more vulnerable to vaccines, according to a new study. The mutation increased the number of spikes on the protein, which is what the virus uses to bind itself to cells.

TODAY WE ARE LISTENING TO:
This is a change of pace—Michael Johnathon is an American singer who is a bit under the radar. He tries to celebrate American roots music and the musicians who made it. In this clip—which might help remind a listener of the hopeful potential of that country—he performs Woody’s Song, a collection of sayings and lyrics from the folksinger Woody Guthrie.
