June 22, 2020 — Hello CurveFlatteners, and welcome to the Monday edition of the Daily CurveFlattener, as we begin the 12th week of working from home for the team at Chronicle. (That's 120,960 minutes, if you're keeping score.) Kylie Rebernik is reporting this morning.

Yesterday, was both Father's Day and National Indigenous Peoples Day. Canada's Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, gave a speech on the importance of remembering the art, culture and history of the First Nation peoples in Canada and in his speech he also recognized the current systemic inequalities and discrimination to which indigenous people are still subject that has been amplified by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In light of the current pandemic, organizers of Ottawa's major Indigenous festival, the Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival, was moved to a virtual format in order to comply with current Health Canada restrictions. Festival organizers reported that the Facebook group set up for the event had more than 200,000 members.

COVID CHRONICLE 06/22/20
  • A new study published in JAMA Otolaryng Head Neck Surg (Jun. 18, 2020) online, has found that a loss of taste was present in 55.4 per cent of patients with coronavirus. Similarly, a loss of smell was present in 41.7 per cent of patients. A total of 204 patients, who were diagnosed with Covid-19 in 2019, were used in the study. Investigators concluded that based on these results any person with a loss of taste and smell should be tested for Covid-19.
  • Via Rail announced that starting tomorrow (06/23220) all passengers will be required to wear face masks, except when eating and drinking.
  • A team of Canadian researchers will be the first team to begin a clinical trial to test if the antiviral drug favipiravir can help fight Covid-19 outbreaks in long-term care homes.

STORIES CHRONICLE IS WORKING ON TODAY

Assistant Editor K, Rebernik, a.k.a the person reporting to you today, has interview Dr. Zenas Yiu on a study that looked at the risk hospitalization and death in patients with psoriasis.

RIGHT NOW WE ARE READING...

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. As mentioned in my report on June 11, 2020, Editorial Assistant, Jeremy Visser and I are in an unofficial book club, well we are also in an official book club and this is our book this month. Our book club has also adapted and have taken our meetings online.

LATER WE ARE WATCHING...

The Order (season 2). A Netflix original, The Order, is my guilty pleasure show. There may be magic and werewolves involved.

TONIGHT WE ARE COOKING...

Nothing, actually. Tonight I will be picking up take-out and enjoying a socially distant dinner with my mom and step-dad as a belated Father's Day celebration.

THE WEEK AHEAD
